Dear Mayor:

The U.S. Conference of Mayors is excited to launch a whole new program at the 73rd Annual Conference in Chicago, June 10-14, 2005!

Our annual meeting is a place where mayors not only meet with high-ranking government officials, but voice concerns, thoughts and exchange ideas. In that spirit, in partnership with our sponsor Veolia Environment, we are enhancing the ever-popular Meet the Mayors program to focus on your "best practices." We want to demonstrate that mayors across the country are on the cutting edge of innovation, efficient government and creative ideas.

As your leadership, we are requesting your participation. Each mayor, whether attending this year's annual conference or not, should submit a one-page description of a "best practice" to the Conference prior to the meeting. If you are attending the meeting, plan to tape a one-two minute description of the best practice on-site at the Chicago Hilton in PDR 1, the Meet the Mayors taping room, during the following times:

  • Friday, June 10: 9-5 p.m.
  • Saturday, June 11: 9-5 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 12: 9-12 p.m.
  • Monday, June 13: 9-5 p.m.

The best practice should include an overview, a specific challenge and the steps your city took to meet that challenge. Further, it can be in any category, ranging from community development, the environment, technology, education, housing, etc. All best practices submitted before or during the meeting or taped at the meeting will be posted on the Meet the Mayors section of usmayors.org for one year. You may submit your best practice online at usmayors.org/bestpractice. If possible, please submit your best practice by June 1, 2005. You may tape a description at the meeting even if you do not submit a one-page description.

In previous years, we have asked mayors to respond to general questions on a particular theme for the Meet the Mayors program. The Meet the Mayors program has become the most popular and accessed page within our award-winning website usmayors.org, with more than 600 mayors participating to date.

We and Veolia Environment are excited about this new direction of the Meet the Mayors program, and we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to showcase your city and your leadership through a best practice that can be emulated by other cities. We are certain through your ongoing participation that the program will become even more popular to future users who want to learn more about U.S. cities.

Please contact Jim Welfley at jwelfley@usmayors.org if you have any questions.
